Wouldn’t it need an extra set of taillights in the trunk since the actual ones are on a movable panel?

Audi Q5 comes to mind. Makes sense for a really big opening but I’m sure there will be some snow/rain wonkiness.

Really feels like you should make it a full on hatchback at that point. Also that line along the edge of the lid is ugly. Though I imagine the trunk is fairly practical.

I was thinking that design isn’t legal. Maybe there are more inside the trunk but I have my doubts.

I paid little attention to the design of the car until very recently. I’m now in love . So French.

All hatchbacks have their taillights on a panel that opens.

Does it need lower reflectors, maybe?

Kinja'd!!!1

“ US law requires that reflectors are visible even if a vehicle has any doors/trunk open. Since most SUVs have a liftgate, they need reflectors mounted somewhere that will still be visible with the back open - usually the only option is on the bumper.”

Kinja'd!!!2

I’m pretty sure that’s a requirement for the US and one of the main reasons why trunk openings and tail lights are often weird. Maybe the rules changed, or they’ve got some cleaver workaround.

Also, that guy is either really short or that car is very tall. Of course, those giant wheels could really be throwing off my sense of proportion.

Older ones did, but it’s my understanding that newer cars need to have their lights visible if the trunk is open. That’s why cars like the Buick Cascada have a goofy second set in the trunk

Its a European thing. In Europe functional lights must be visible with the trunk open. As far as I know you only need reflectors in the US but we end up with cars that meet the European regs anyway since it's easier to just build them all the same.

All hatchbacks have their taillights on a panel that opens.

This is definitely not true. For example, start with the most basic hatchback for sale in the US:

Or on the much higher end:

The Audi does have some lights on the hatch, but they are redundant to the fixed lights.

Does it need lower reflectors, maybe?

Looks like it has them below the body color section of the bumper.

Yeah all the Audi SUVs except the Q8 have their lights built into the tailgate, and a second set of lights on the bumper for use when the tailgate is open. This carries over to the Bentayga, but not the Urus, Macan or Cayenne.

Mine doesn’t. The bit on the hatch are just runn ing lights, they don’t do any of the braking or turn signal portion.

The 3rd brake light does move though, which must not be part of the regulation guess.....

So it's like a hatchback where the extra length of the trunk isn't usable? Surely that reduces cargo capacity.

Those LED strips are a much better solution to this stupid problem than what others have done. One of the most infuriating things about my Bolt are the stupid tacked on tail lights (and turn signals) on the bottom bumper, since the actual lights that flow with the design of the car are part of the trunk itself.

Agreed - lots of people seem to be complaining about it on this thread. I think it’s a refreshingly nice take. Not sure how functional that trunk will be, but it sure is a unique and interesting look.
